Obituary

Carol was born April 7, 1926, Carol Virginia Lloyd to Jesse and Mildred Lambert Lloyd.  She had an older brother Evan and lived most of her life in the Kansas City area, sometimes on the Kansas side, sometimes Missouri.  Sometimes she would tell stories from her childhood, like the time her dolly bit her, or the time she found some money and sneaked off to buy a lime sucker (which to her great disappointment turned out to be spearmint!), or about the neighbor boy who asked her to the movie and then forgot and stood her up.

On November 24 th , 1944, she married Lott Lorraine Sandy.  Lorraine was 28 and in the military. They were married but two weeks when he was shipped overseas to the island of Tinian in the South Pacific, where he was an aircraft mechanic in the Army Air Corp. Carol didn't see him at all in 1945 during which time she attended Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa, and was editor of the Acacia.  Eventually, Carol and Lorraine had four daughters:  Helen, Diana, Janet, and Marcia.

Carol learned cake decorating from her mother-in-law and made beautiful cakes until she was about 80. She also made and decorated molded sugar hollowed out Easter eggs and placed miniature scenes inside.

Carol and friend, Etta Conner, were long time Brownie and Girl Scout leaders for their daughters, Helen and Dana, and a group of gals (now in their 70s) who still get together annually. These gals called her "Mamma Carol" and sent her notes and cards frequently!

And Carol's freezer was always full of Girl Scout cookies.

Carol worked for many years as the "office mother" for Radke, Hoffman and Fry, orthodontists. All of her girls had their teeth straightened free!  Carol maintained contact with Dick Radke and his daughters Janice, Debbie, and Martha and with Bill Hoffman until her death.

For years Spina Bifida and cystic fibrosis children enjoyed summer camps under Carol's direction.  At church camps lanyard class was her specialty.

In her late 50's, due to his failing health, Lorraine and Carol moved to Sun City, AZ, where Lorraine's sister and brother-in-law lived. Both became real estate agents with Century 21 but Carol worked harder at it. Lorraine died there in 1988.  They had been married 43 years. Soon after, she returned to Kansas.

Until the last few years of her life, Carol traveled around the states quite a bit and to Israel, the United Kingdom, Italy, and on a cruise or two. She went to Jamaica on a Christian mission trip when she was 80 something.

Carol had a servant's heart and used her widow years to volunteer in a number of ways: ushering at the local community college programs, volunteering at the visitors' desk of the local hospital until she was 90, at Christmas time heading up the Angel Tree project, a Christian ministry to families of prisoners. She cared for people in one way or another all her life, but especially in her later years. Until their deaths she cared for Lorraine and then her mother, her aunt Ruth, Ann Radke and several other family members and friends  She stayed with the sick or recovering or anyone with a need.

Once Carol shared her home with young friends, Kathi and Lana, who needed temporary housing. Occasionally, it was foreign exchange students and later Chinese visiting professors. Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) was another of Carol's loves.  After completing the course of study herself, she became a devoted children's leader. She was a true friend and loved by all who knew her.

Carol always had a desire to please God but when she was about 50 or so she came to a clearer understanding of who God is and His provision for her of a Savior, His son Jesus Christ. She loved Him and held steadfastly to her faith in Him.  She looked forward with great anticipation to His coming to take her to be with Him eternally.

Some of her favorite pastimes were socializing, going to church, reading, coloring, working jigsaw or crossword puzzles, watching old classic movies, watching Jeopardy, and watching her great-grandsons play baseball.

On October 25, 2021 Carol peacefully left her earthly family, cheered on by her four daughters.  Known by her family as Mom, Mama, Grandma, Grammy, GG and Fluffy, she leaves these grateful daughters, Helen Browne (Paul dec.), Diana Goldman (Norm), Janet Gooch (Ed), Marcia Scott (Lane), 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren and a large extended family.
