Obituary

Denman Wolfe, 98, the last surviving WW2 Army Ranger in Arkansas, Father and Grandfather, longtime resident of Scottsville, Arkansas answered his last call to duty and went to be with his Lord on January 30, 2020 surrounded by his family. To surviving Scottsville old-timers, Denman, much to his delight, was always "That damn Yankee" who lived off highway 27, even after being there forty years!

Denman Wolfe joined the Army in 1940, serving with distinction, making the Operation Torch landings in Africa and the Sicily Campaign and was selected to be a member of the Army's elite "Rangers" serving in D Company, 5 th Ranger Battalion, scaling Point Su Hoc during the D-Day Invasion. Denman was there when Major General Norman Cota said "Rangers lead the way!" During the D day invasion.

Denman was called back to active duty during the Korean Conflict and served on active duty until 1964. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star with V, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman's Badge with Star, and numerous other combat decorations and awards.

After retiring from the Army, Denman moved to Arkansas, to raise cattle and his family, but was called to serve again in the Department of Corrections under the direction of then Governor Winthrop Rockefeller to help clean up the Cummins Prison Farm System. Denman was also a Deputy Sheriff in Pope County before going back to farming and raising cattle.

Denman was an expert woodsman, his passion was always being outside with his children and especially delighted in his grandchildren, fishing, mushroom hunting, deer hunting, training dogs and just riding the Ozark trails with his crew in a battered old Toyota, going places no vehicle should go to the delighted and often horror of his young and old passengers alike! Denman was always making something for his grandchildren, carving whistles, painting, making apple dolls, or sling shots. Denman was an expert gardener, wine maker, and cook, often cooking up some exotic dish foe all to sample.

Denman was a 32 Degree Mason and was, for many years, an election judge for the Scottsville polling station.

Denman was the son of Emily and Robert (Jep) Wolfe and was born 12 October 1921 in Jackson, Kentucky. Denman was preceded in death by his mother and father, his brothers William and Bristol Wolfe, and his wife Kay Darby Wolfe.

Daughter Lesa (Race) Wolfe Crowell, grandsons Chace and Zac Crowell of Dardanelle, Arkansas. Daughter Lori (Michael) Mayberry, of Pottsville, Arkansas and grandchildren, Christina Ward (Christopher), great grandchildren Tristan, and Caddis of Helena, Montana; Christopher (Amy) Dotson, great granddaughters Jaylen and Abigail of Dardanelle, Arkansas.
