Obituary

Listen to Obituary

DeWanda Cathryn Gray, born October 21, 1942, in Smackover, Arkansas, peacefully entered eternal rest on August 15, 2026, at the loving home of her son Philip and daughter-in-law Heidi in Russellville, Arkansas. She was 83.

DeWanda's life was a symphony of service and kindness, resonating throughout her roles as a beloved teacher, mentor, and music director. With a Bachelor’s in Music and a Master’s in Education from Arkansas Tech University, she devoted her career to enriching young minds. Her impact was felt deeply at Crossett and Danville High Schools as a band director, and at S.C. Tucker Elementary where she focused on the reading and science needs of her classroom. Her high expectations for each student created a lasting impact on their lives.

Her dedication extended beyond the classroom to her community at First Baptist Church in Danville, where she directed music with passion. A proud member of the National Education Association and the Daughters of the American Revolution, she also shared her heritage as a member of the Sovereign Nation of the Chickamauga Cherokee Tribe. DeWanda even served for a time as a deputy of the Carroll County Sherriff's Department.

She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-six years, Thomas "Tom" Michael Gray Sr., as well as her parents, Samuel and Leora Martin Prather, her sister Dorris Faye Johnson, and her brothers-in-law, David Farmer and Paul O'Neal.  DeWanda's legacy is carried on by her children: Thomas Michael Gray, Jr. (Brooke), Philip Gray (Heidi), and Janet Freeman (Emily). Her spirit also lives on through her siblings: Phyllis O'Neal, Winford Prather (Belva), Darlene Farmer, and Wayne Prather (Ginny).  DeWanda was very proud of her grandchildren: Thomas Michael Gray, III (Calista), Abigail Gray, Jaron Condley (Breanna), Mason Condley, Garrett Gray (Kaitlyn), Jackson Gray, Boone Freeman, and one great-grandchild, Don Michael Gray.

In celebration of her life, a visitation will be held on Thursday, August 20th, at 1:00 pm at First Baptist Church, Danville, AR. The service will follow at 2:00 pm, led by Pastor Daniel Morris, with music provided by Sandra Millsap.  DeWanda will be laid to rest at Earl Ladd Cemetery in Danville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Danville First Baptist Church Music Program or the Yell County Library.
