Howard Hurlburt, Jr., a resident of Dardanelle, Arkansas formally of Bethany and Hamden, Connecticut died November 20, 2013 at his home after a lengthy illness, he was 65. Born in New Haven, Connecticut, he was raised in Hamden and graduated from Lyman Hall High School. He served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War and had an honorable discharge. Howie's fire service career began when he joined the Mt. Carmel Volunteer Fire Company in 1965. He became a member of the career department in 1970 (after working two years for the Public Works department) and was one of Hamden's first EMTs the following year. In 1976, Howie was among Hamden's first eight paramedics. Following a brief stint as the Department's first Mechanic in 1984, Howie was promoted to Lieutenant in the fire department and was assigned to Platoons 3 and 4 until his retirement in 1993. He also worked for Murrays, New Haven Ambulance, Flanagan, Nutiles and Mayfair ambulance services. He mentored many new firefighters, paramedics and EMT's. Howie was also a volunteer firefighter and EMT for the Bethany Fire Department & Ambulance Corps. Always the life of the party, he enjoyed being with his friends and always had a story or two to tell! When he was younger, he worked with his family at Hurlburt Nurseries and the family landscaping business. Upon relocating to Arkansas, he became a licensed LPN and Respiratory Therapist and worked in several hospitals in the Danville/Dardanelle area where he was respected for his clinical skills, knowledge and friendship. Howie is survived by his wife Audrey Hurlburt her children Carly and David Pettit all of Dardanelle; Andrew Medley and family of Atkins; mother Nancy Saccani Hurlburt (Hamden Town Clerk) of Hamden, Ct., and two sons Edward Hurlburt and his wife Naomi of Lincolville, Me., and Craig and his wife Kim Hurlburt of Rhoade Island. Step-children, Bunny Furr-Rye of Russellville, Bruce Burchard and family of new Blaine. Also left behind are his Brother Clark Hurlburt (retired Deputy Fire Chief Hamden Fire) and wife Susan of Bethany, Ct., and Sister Betsy Gaffney and husband Paul of Trucksville, Pa. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Amanda, Rowan and Freya Hurlburt and nieces Shannon Gaffney Castineira and Liz Hurlburt. He was pre-deceased by his wife Joanne Hurlburt and father Howard Hurlburt, Sr. Viewing hours will be Friday night from 6-8 at Cornwell in Danville.
