Obituary

Irby Burton Teel was born September 22, 1907 and had just celebrated his 104th birthday. He passed away November 15, 2011 at Perry County Nursing Home. Irby was a very healthy person, and never had to take prescription drugs. He had a remarkable memory. He was born before the T-Model Ford and lived through the space age. Everyone enjoyed listening to history the way he remembered it. Irby moved to Altheimer in 1942 and farmed cotton until he retired. He worked in the dust and noise of the cotton gin until he lost his singing voice and hearing. His first love was Stamps Baxter Music. He served as President of the Arkansas State Convention, Jefferson County Singing Club and many other local clubs. If there was a service or funeral anywhere he was called on to sing. His favorite was with his cousin Arnold Teel. Irby would sing and Arnold would preach. Irby founded two churches during his life. He taught Sunday school and was choir director of many churches. At age 95, he walked to the Post Office everyday. Irby is survived by a son, Irby Lee Teel, and daughter Joyce Townsell (James) all of Casa. Grandchildren are Larry Townsell of Casa, Shar-Ron Atkinson (Mike) of Oppelo, Martha Ann Rose of Little Rock. Great-Grandchildren are Bradley Atkinson, Autumn Atkinson, and Brandon Townsell(Meagan). Great-Great-Grandchildren are Kylie Atkinson, and Brylee Townsell. Irby was proceeded in death by his wife of 35 years and the mother of his children, Mintie McElroy Teel(RN). Also proceeded by daughter Sylvia(RN) and husband Dr. Ben Searcy, granddaughter Emma Joiner, and brother Thomas Teel. His Parents were John and Mae Alexander Teel of the Rose Creek Community. He was also proceeded in death by his 2nd wife Beatrice Boyd Teel of 35 years. At the age of 99 he went to renew his drivers license, and turned in Beatrices Handicap parking pass because he didnt need it anymore. He was very active, he enjoyed deer hunting and going to basketball games. He drove his 1972 Maverick until 2007 when we had to take the distributer cap off of his car to keep him from driving any longer. Irby was the last of the Stamps Baxter Music Singers. When All of Gods Singers Get Home is a very appropriate song for him. Sylvia, Joyce, & Irby Lee had a wonderful Father, and were blessed to have him all of these years. Funeral Services will be at 2:00pm, Thursday, November 17, 2011 at Casa Baptist Church with Bro. Mike Atkinson and bro. Gene Tanner officiating. Burial will be at Casa Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00pm 2:00pm, Thursday at the church. Arrangements by Cornwell Funeral Home, Dardanelle.
