Obituary

Dr. Lary Compton (Compy) George, Sr. was unsaddled from this world August 6, 2024 at his home in Danville, Arkansas. If you knew him, you know that surely he "rode into heaven a-shoutin"!

Compy was born March 5, 1939 in Little Rock, Arkansas to C.R. (Babe) and Fanny Compton George. He was raised in Danville, Arkansas and married his high school sweetheart, Phyllis VanZandt George. He attended the University of Arkansas, UCA, and Arkansas Tech and then received his D.D.S. from the School of Dentistry at the University of Tennessee. He and his young family then returned to Danville to build a dental office where he practiced for 50 years. Compy loved dentistry and his excellent skills, combined with gentleness, attracted people from all over to come to him for their dental needs. He made people feel loved because he truly did love them. That sense of being loved allowed people who were deathly afraid of "the dentist " to relax and occasionally even fall asleep in the chair during a procedure.

Another of his loves was his farm. He felt that the farm 'evened him out', and he could spend hours out there with his cattle and quarter horses. He hauled his daughter and granddaughters to more horse shows than can be counted and now they continue in that same tradition with his great-grandchildren.

It is impossible to remember Compy without highlighting the Sunday in June, 1970 when he surrendered his life to Jesus. He was a changed-forever man! And that change in him brought about a series of changes in the lives of so many of us, from all walks of Life.

Compy was a member of the Danville Methodist Church, where he had been a Sunday School teacher. He was the Lay Witness Coordinator for many missions in the following states: Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma and Tennessee. These missions were held in Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian, Christian and Assembly of God churches. He taught weekly Bible studies in the Methodist churches of both Belleville and Danville. He was often asked to be a Lay Speaker at various Methodist churches. For many years, Compy participated in the Tucker Prison Ministry. He was also involved in Cowboys for Christ, where he frequently spoke at Sunday services and was asked to be the speaker at the All American Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, Ohio.

Dr. George was the past president of the Arkansas Brahman Association and was a member of the Arkansas Cattleman's Association.  In 2012, the Danville Chamber of Commerce presented Compy and Phyllis George with the "Citizens of the Year Award."

Compton was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister and brother-in-law, Janette George and Charles E. Richison, as well as two first cousins who were more like brothers, Lloyd Reid George and Buford L. (Bood) Keathley .

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Phyllis VanZandt George, a son, Dr. Lary Compton George, Jr., a daughter and son-in-law, JanAnn and Richard Harmon, and three grandchildren, Mariah (Zac) Smith, Allyson George, and Hannah Harmon. He has five great-grandchildren, Clayton and Mya Harmon, Rylee Jo Young, Blake and Aspen Smith. He also leaves a host of loving nieces, nephews, and cousins, as well as innumerable friends.

Pallbearers are members of his Sunday School class, as follows: Phil Moudy, Eddie Bruce, Robert Wood, Mark Hamrick, Melvin Bottoms, and Riley Kitchens .  Honorary Pallbearers are Bob Tygart, Jesse Veliz, Bob Pledger and Kenny Crawford

Compy was a free spirit and worried very little about the opinions of others.  He had a wonderful sense of humor, could tell a whopper of a story or joke, and never failed to let you know that God loved you and he loved you, too.

Services will be held at the Danville Methodist Church Friday, August 9, 2024 at 2:00 pm.  Visitation will be Thursday, August 8, 2024, from 5-7 pm at Danville Methodist Church.
