Obituary

Robert "Sunny" George of Danville, Ark., passed away Saturday, September 16, 2023, at age 92. Born on October 28, 1930, in Newellton, Louisiana, he spent most of his life in Mount George, Ark. Sunny graduated from Ola High School, where he was called Elroy; played basketball, football and baseball; and began driving the bus at age 16.

A veteran in the U.S. Air Force, he served in the Korean War. Sunny worked at Orbit Valve and Braden Winch in Tulsa before returning to Yell County. He attended Arkansas Tech University; owned a service station and Mount George Grocery; and worked for Dr. Pennington, at Taber Metals in Russellville and other positions before retiring from Tyson Foods. He also always had extra jobs like cutting wood, moving furniture and raising cows.

Sunny, who met no stranger with many friends, was best known for his hard work and helping anyone who needed it – all while storytelling and joking. A faithful, lifelong member of the Mount George Church of Christ, his service included as an elder at one time, cemetery groundskeeping, volunteering at Food on the Mount and providing countless rides to doctor appointments or wherever there was a need. For many years, Sunny was a volunteer firefighter at Galla Rock, worked at election polling sites and volunteered at Camp Caudle.

He was preceded in death by wife Betty Jo (Hames) George, to whom he was married to for 66 years; grandson Joshua Trent George; parents Clarence and Bertha Rae (Smith) George; sisters Zelma George, Geneva George, Loueva "Babe" Mills, Betty Sue George and Bertha Pennington; infant brother Joe David George; nephews Jim Mills and Larry Mills; and niece Brenda Utley.

Sunny is survived by daughter Elizabeth "Betsi" (Raymond) Henson of Austin, Ark., and Chris (Cathy) George of Danville; grandchildren Robin (Mark) Mizell of Rogers, Nancy (Juan) Morales of Cabot, Nathan (Amanda) George of Russellville, Lee (Andrea) Henson of Hector, and Zac (Christina) George of Danville; great-grandchildren Noah, Wyatt, Ethan and Jessa Henson; Gabriel Wisdom; Joshua, AnaKate, Jaxon, Sonny Mae, Joelle and Eleanor (due in December) George; nieces Sherry Holt, Cheryl Campbell and Cathy Williams; and nephews Bill Mills and Doug McCutchen.

The family would like to thank his caregivers Amy, Lisa and Tosha, as well as Hospice Home Service. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. prior to a celebration of life service at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 20, 2023 at Mount George Church of Christ. A private burial will follow in Mount George Cemetery. Pallbearers are Mark Mizell, Juan Morales, Nathan George, Lee Henson, Zac George, Noah Henson, Wyatt Henson, Gabriel Wisdom, Ethan Henson and Joshua George. Honorary pallbearer is Jaxon George.
