Obituary

Shirley Ann Rollans was born on October 15, 1941 in Danville, AR and died on March 26, 2013 in Little Rock after a hard fought battle with cancer. She was the only child of Odell and Ludie Mae Hancock Rollans of Danville. Shirley grew up in Danville and spent her childhood with a group of close friends and cousins engaging in sleepovers, which were usually hosted at her mother's house and often playing basketball. Although she spent most of her adult life living in Central Arkansas, Shirley always held her friends and the Danville community very close by visiting often and even maintaining a residence there. Upon graduation from the Danville Public School System in 1959, Shirley went on to attend Arkansas Polytechnic College (now Arkansas Tech at Russellville) and graduated in 1963 with a degree in Education. She began a lifelong career of public service as a High School Teacher at Crossett High in Crossett, AR, where she worked from 1963-1966. Shirley then returned to Yell County where she began an extensive career with the Arkansas Department of Human Services. Starting as a caseworker in Yell County, Shirley moved to a casework position in Pulaski County before being promoted to a variety of supervisory positions in Pulaski County. Through most of the 1970's and 1980's Shirley served as the County Administrator for the Pulaski South DHS office. From 1986 until the fall of 1994, when she retired for a brief period, she was a Field Manager for DHS who was responsible for the administration of programs in a 15 county area and the supervision approximately 250 employees. In late January of 1995, Shirley was hired as the assistant Director and head of the Personnel Department of Integrity, Inc., a non profit agency that provides an array of community based service for people who experience disabilities. In her capacity at Integrity, Shirley interviewed most of the applicants who applied for employment, supervised program directors and supervisory teams in a variety of service areas. For 18 years, Shirley continued to be an active part of the Integrity staff until her health precluded her from working full time, at which point she continued to come in and check on her coworkers and friends as often as she was able. Shirley was an active community volunteer serving as a sponsor for Y Teens and chaperoning trips to national Y Teen conventions. She also was a great contributor to several causes which were dear to her heart such as various animal welfare and wildlife preservation groups. Shirley is remembered by those she knew as a kind, fair and gentle soul. She was an avid supporter of individuals with disabilities, and strong proponent for the underdog. A great friend of animals, everyone who knew Shirley was keenly aware of her love of dogs. Misty, Sassy, Poco, and Ranger brought Shirley hours of peace and joy in their time in her life. Most recently, Maya and Pepper were grateful to be by Shirley and her family. Shirley loved the beach and would try to get somewhere to hear the surf as often as possible. She also loved New Orleans and the happy memories made there listening to Jazz. Shirley is survived by her family, Vicki Grantham, Juli Grantham, Kamran Grantham and Jon Grantham all of Little Rock; her cousins Mike Peterson and Bill Hancock and lifelong friend Helen Maughn. The funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 30, 2013 at the Danville First Baptist Church in Danville, AR. with a brief graveside service at New Hope Cemetery in Dardanelle, AR. Visitation will be 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. before service at the church. In lieu of flower the family requests that memorial gifts be made to the Little Rock Animal Village or Danville First Baptist Church Children Ministry in Danville, AR.
