Thomas Verdell Cox age 80 of Steve passed away Sunday, March 25, 2012 at Mitchell's Nursing Home. He was born May 23, 1931 in Steve, AR. to the late Thomas W. & Grace Crawford Cox. Tom graduated from Plainview High School and then moved to Phoenix, AZ where he was a jockey for several years. He joined the Army and served in the Korean War. He married Helen Jean Smoot May 30, 1954 they had one daughter Lynann. They moved to Fairfield, Idaho where he owned and operated a hardware store. Tom was a "jack of all trades" as a plumber, carpenter, electrician, painter and handyman. In 1969 Tom moved back home to Arkansas and brought with him his new bride Barbara and four step children. In 1970 a new baby daughter joined their family, Caryn Cheri. Barbara died in 1975. Tom married Kay Montgomery who shared many years of joy & happiness until Tom's dreaded illness "Alzheimer" took him away from her. Tom spent the last years of his life in Mitchell's Nursing Home being cared for by many loving staff members. Tom loved to hunt, ride horses, watch football & basketball. It didn't matter if it was grade school, high school, college or pro. He loved to hunt. When he lived in Idaho he shot and killed many elk and deer. He also shot his moose and the rack hung in his hardware store and in Tom and Kay's house out on South Fourche. He was a Army Veteran of the Korean War, a lifetime member Plainview V.F.W. Fisher-Law Post 641 and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Barbara Cox; sisters Norma Dale Campbell, Arlene and Linda Mae Cox. Survivors include his wife Kay Cox of Tulsa, Oklahoma; daughters Lynann Cox Stewart of Meridian, Idaho; Caryn Cox Gillum of Plainview; grandchildren Leslie Ann Stewart of Boise, Idaho; Nicole Gillum of Russellville; Blane Gillum of Russellville; Grace & Douglas Kinnaman of Tulsa; Clayton, Kendall and Cameron Casper all of Evans Georgia; sister Glenda Fay & John Segress of Oklahoma; several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers include Robby St.Clair, Eric St.Clair, Randy Furr, Max Furr, Jeff Montgomery and Jim Blackwood . Honorary Pallbearers Blane Gillum, Noel Marshall, Mike Cunningham, Staff of Mitchell's Nursing Home. Graveside service will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday March 29, 2012 at Nooner Cemetery with President David Thorgerson officiating. Visitation will be 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. before service at Cemetery.
